Zirconia is now the primary indirect restorative material used in the dental industry. Zirconia is used in multiple ways – full contour, veneered framework, micro-layered, and hybrid frameworks for full arch implant born reconstruction. Furthermore, there is no longer just one zirconia type as a variety of materials with varying translucency and properties have been introduced to the market. Which material should be used for what clinical situation? What compromises may be made when selecting a translucent material versus a conventional “white” zirconia? Finishing procedures and sintering schedules also may vary according to zirconia and restoration type selected. This lecture will provide insight into material solutions available to meet patient treatment planning, fracture resistance, clinically relevant strength, esthetics, and predictability.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the properties of the variety of zirconia materials available for restorations.
  • Learn the appropriate finishing procedures for zirconia restorations.
  • Select zirconia materials based on clinical requirements.
