DS Study Club: Diversity: It Goes Beyond Race and Ethnicity

As professionals we understand and value the role of diversity and inclusion in society; yet it goes beyond race and ethnicity. It is important consider the backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of others to help create an environment that represents the rich, diverse, unique world in which we live.  In society, we are called to think together, not alike. As healthcare professionals, you must acknowledge the significance of diversity in the delivery of patient care and develop strategies to become more inclusive beyond race.  This course will help health care providers acknowledge and appreciate the potential promise of each person’s uniqueness and use the information to foster and inclusive environment and remove potential barriers to access to care. A discussion on identifying underlying cultural biases aimed at improving the provision of nondiscriminatory care for patients will be had.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

• Define diversity of culture, diversity of thought, and diversity of action and its contribution to individual perceptions
• Recognize the opportunities to be more inclusive beyond race and ethnicity
• Reflect on the importance of committing to diversity and inclusion
• Develop skills to effectively and respectfully provide care for patients who identify as LGBTQ and use cultural information and terminology to establish a clinical relationship
