Long-lasting direct resin restorations are dependent in large measure on the clinician understanding and applying key principles in the use and application of dental adhesives. While seemingly simple, the complex chemical components and need for attention to detailed application techniques require the operator have robust understanding of the material’s handling and properties to avoid marginal gaps and staining, debonding and post-operative sensitivity. Modern “universal” adhesives offer the promise of outstanding clinical performance—but only if the clinician is meticulous in following proper techniques. This course will provide an evidence-based approach to help clinicians apply complicated bonding concepts in a practical and straightforward way. Course Objectives: Understand the fundamental mechanisms of bonding to enamel and dentin. Identify the different strategies for bonding and when and where to apply them. Learn the complex chemical compositions of universal adhesives and why moisture tolerance can be so important in clinical practice. Understand the critical steps in successful bonding with universal adhesives. Understand how light curing and can make or break the long-term success of the restoration.
