Global Clinical Case Contest 2019-2020: Dentsply Sirona virtually honors excellent treatment results of dental students

Clinical Affairs

Annually, Dentsply Sirona conducts the Global Clinical Case Contest (GCCC) to award outstanding achievements in aesthetic dentistry by students from all over the world. This year, the final round took place virtually and an international jury selected the best entries from clinically challenging case studies.

Charlotte/Konstanz, September 30, 2020. A radiant smile can bring joy, especially in these difficult times. All over the world, young dentists contribute their skills and commitment to help people smile with confidence again. This year, the jury of the Dentsply Sirona Global Clinical Case Contest honored the best in their field under very special conditions due to COVID-19.

This year's winners of the Dentsply Sirona Global Clinical Case Contest were announced during an online event on September 23. Prof. Dr. Rainer Seemann, Vice President Global Clinical Affairs at Dentsply Sirona, was part of the 3-member jury that selected the three winners from the best entries worldwide. The other members of the jury were two notable international dentists, Prof. Ian Cline (United Kingdom) and Prof. Gaetano Paolone (Italy).

The first prize was awarded to Emil Abiev, Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry, Russia.

Second place went to Alperen Oz, Hacettepe University, Turkey.

The third prizes went to Li Zhen, Sichuan University, China and to Russell Hashemi, University of Plymouth, United Kingdom.

Due to COVID-19, the competition settings were different this year. "Because of the ongoing pandemic, there were a number of students who were unable to complete their contest entries,” said Dr. Markus Kopp, Senior Manager Global Clinical Education at Dentsply Sirona. “Despite this, Dentsply Sirona continued to support them by providing product donations and other contributions.”

"The competition sends out a clear signal: The cooperation between Dentsply Sirona and universities around the world is essential to connect with the most talented dentists of tomorrow – most especially during these difficult times. In this way, we can ensure that patients will continue to have access to the best possible treatment in the future. And, together with promising international dental experts, we can continuously develop our innovative portfolio in the field of restorative dentistry,” said Prof. Dr. Rainer Seemann.

For direct anterior and posterior restorations, students can use the entire Dentsply Sirona Restorative product line as part of their participation in the GCCC if needed.

More than 760 submissions

The Dentsply Sirona Global Clinical Case Contest has been taking place since 2004/2005. The competition is aimed at dental students with less than two years of clinical practice. Participants document their successful treatment case in text and images. They are supported by a tutor from their university.

Over 760 students from 140 global universities participated in this year’s contest; more than 4,600 students from more than 130 renowned dental schools from all over the world have taken part so far.

The global competition finalists will each receive a copy of a brand new textbook, “Direkte Restaurationen im Seitenzahnbereich” – “Direct restorations in the posterior region” – co-authored by jury member Prof. Paolone, with additional prizes available to the top three student-contestants. The competition also attracts considerable attention from international dental magazines.

The application phase for the 2020-2021 competition is currently underway. For further information or to register for Dentsply Sirona GCCC, please contact your local Dentsply Sirona organization.
